Mission:
The mission of Galveston Ballet is two-fold 1) to
offer the young people of Galveston County the opportunity to
participate in a learning company where they can experience the
discipline and beauty of ballet and develop their skills and talents in
this domain; 2) to enrich the cultural life of the entire community by
presenting performances of great classical and contemporary works each
year.
Purpose of
Organization:
Galveston ballet's current programs include
Training, Performance, Community Education, and Scholarship.
Training: Galveston Ballet currently offers classes for ages three
through adult. The members of the performing company study technique
ten hours per week. Galveston Ballet also offers a variety of summer
programs including 'Fairy Tale Camp' for students 4-6, Summer Intensive
for teenagers and adults, and has hosted a Russian Workshop with guest
artists.
Performance:
Galveston Ballet presents
one full-length classical ballet in the spring of each year and one
mixed repertory program each fall. Ballets performed have included
Coppelia, Giselle, La Fille mal Garde, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, the
Firebird, and Don Quixote, as well as excerpts from many other ballets.
Both performances are held at the Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston,
Texas. In May of 2003, the Ballet performed La Bayadere and in the
fall, a mixed repertory performance entitled European Blend. In May of
2004, La Fille mal Gardee will be performed. Plans for next season
include a fall mixed repertory program with live music (versus recorded
music) and the production of the ballet Napoli, which has never been
performed by an American ballet company, in the spring of 2005.
Community
Education:
Galveston Ballet
instituted a 'Dance in Schools' program in the spring of 2000. The
company brings a 40-minute lecture demonstration program to four area
elementary schools. As part of this program, free tickets to the
performances are given to interested children and a limited number of
scholarships are awarded based on letters of desire from the children
at the demonstration. Galveston Ballet hopes to increase community
awareness of the performing arts through this program as well as give
interested children the opportunity to win a scholarship. For the
spring of 2004, this program is being supported by the Kempner
Foundation. Galveston Ballet hopes to continue this program into the
2004/2005 school year and expand the number of schools involved. In
addition to the 'Dance in Schools' program the Galveston Ballet Company
also performs at public and charity events (such as Octoberfest,
Dickens, Grandkids Festival, nursing homes, Moody Gardens etc.) in
hopes of increasing community awareness and reaching a wider audience.
Scholarship:
Galveston Ballet
currently offers 3 to 4 scholarships per school year, in addition to
work/study scholarships and those scholarships that are part of dance
in schools. Galveston Ballet strives to be in a financial position
where no child wanting to dance will be turned away.
